The Scream of self-liberation Paintings by one of Expressionism's pioneers For Edvard Munch (1863-1944), painting was an act of self-liberation. His treatments of fear, desperation, and death still exert a powerful visual and psychological effect on modern viewers. Of all Munch's paintings, "The Scream" (1893), representing a figure tortured by horror, is the most well-known-and certainly one of the most expressive. The artist reflected his innermost feelings in his work: "In reality, my art is a free confession, an attempt to clarify to myself my own relation to life..." Although Edvard Munch cannot be clearly identified with any single movement, he is deemed a pioneer of Expressionism. The author: Ulrich Bischoff (born in 1947) studied art history, German language and literature studies, sociology, history, philosophy, religion and education in Tubingen and Berlin. He has taught numerous courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at the Universities of Berlin, Kiel, Hamburg, Passau and Dresden. Since 1994 Bischoff has been director of the Gemaldegalerie Neue Meister at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. He has published numerous writings in the areas of classical modernity and contemporary art, including TASCHEN's Edvard Munch and Max Ernst.

Die verworrenen Wege eines Meisters Indem Max Ernst (1891–1976) sich vom eng gesteckten Kulturbegriff seiner Zeit befreite und dessen Grenzen stetig erweiterte, avancierte er zu einer der bedeutendsten Personlichkeiten des Dadaismus und Surrealismus. Seine Entwicklung zum Pionier der Dada-Bewegung gilt als Gegenreaktion auf den Horror des Ersten Weltkriegs. Dass die beruhmte Dada-Ausstellung in Koln wegen angeblicher „Obszonitat“ geschlossen wurde, brachte Ernst dazu, nach Paris auszuwandern, wo er mit den Surrealisten in Kontakt kam und seinen kunstlerischen Horizont noch einmal erweiterte. Als herausragender Kunstler zeichnete sich Ernst vor allem durch die Aneignung von unterschiedlichsten Stilen und Techniken aus und brachte dadurch ein ?uvre hervor, das neben Malereien, Zeichnungen und Skulpturen auch Texte, Buhnenbilder, Collageromane und die Entwicklung seiner eigenen „Frottage“-Technik umfasst. Wahrend des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde der Kunstler wie viele seiner Kollegen in die Emigration gezwungen. Das hielt ihn jedoch nicht davon ab, nach dem Krieg wieder nach Frankreich zuruckzukehren, wo er an seine jahrzehntelange Karriere anknupfte und 1954 den Gro?en Preis fur Malerei der Biennale in Venedig erhielt. A remarkable examination of Edvard Munch's prints, which were central to his creative process and established his reputation as an artist. Edvard Munch (1863-1944), one of the most famous expressionist artists, is best known for The Scream. However, this was just one of the many haunting depictions of raw human emotion, which he fully developed in highly sophisticated prints. Munch's youth was marked by sickness and poverty, and his early works centered around the expression of deep emotional experiences, specifically the deaths of his mother and teenage sister, as well as passionate yet unhappy love affairs of which his deeply religious father disapproved. Experimental and innovative, the style that Munch developed was a radical deviation from the nature of the society portraits and grand Scandinavian landscapes then in vogue. Continually revisiting the subjects of his paintings, Munch evoked a wide range of emotion and mood in his prints and strikingly large lithographs, partly by using an innovative jigsaw technique in his woodcuts that produced a wide variety of color and tone.
